Gladstone, Qld’s
leading and largest seaport city, is located 514 km
north of Brisbane on
Port Curtis - a deepwater natural harbour. It was
initially settled as a penal colony in 1847 and named
after the British Colonial Secretary who later became
Britain’s Prime Minister. Gladstone’s development
only began properly in 1960s with the shipping of
coal mined nearby and today major industries include
the world’s largest alumina plant, shipping coal
& grain and a large cement & lime works.
